The Life and Times of Dawn Wells (Mary Ann on Gilligan's Island)

Today is the first anniversary of the passing of Gilligan's Island star, Dawn Wells, who portrayed  Mary Ann Summers in the 1960s serries.  On December 30, 2020, Dawn died of causes related to COVID-19.  She was 82 years old.

Tina Louise, 87, who played movie star Ginger Grant, on the show, is the only surviving member of the cast, which also included Bob Denver as the title character, Alan Hale Jr. as the Skipper, Jim Backus and Natalie Schafer as millionaire couple Thurston and Lovey Howell and Russell Johnson as the Professor.

Dawn Elberta Wells was born on October 18, 1938 in Reno, Nevada, U.S.A.  Dawn's dream was to become a ballerina.  However, bad knees prevented her from realizing her original goal.  So, she decided to study medicine instead.  In 1956, Dawn enrolled in Stephens College, a private women's college  in Columbia, Missouri, where she majored in chemistry.  After realizing that she had a greater interest in the drama club, Dawn transferred to the University of Washington in Seattle, which was known for its theatre department.  She graduated in 1960 with a degree in theatre and design.

In 1959, Dawn was crowned Miss Nevada.  She represented her home state in the 1960 Miss America pageant, which helped launch her Hollywood career.  After moving to Los Angeles, Dawn made her TV acting debut in The Roaring 20s, an ABC drama series.  In the 1960s, she appeared in episodes of numerous TV series, including several Westerns,  She guest-starred on Maverick (1961), Wagon Train (1961), 77 Sunset Strip (four episodes in 1961),, Bonanza (1962, 1968), The Joey Bishop Show (1962, 1964), Hawaiian Eye (1962) and The F.B.I. (1969).

Dawn's big break came when she was cast as the wholesome Mary Ann Summers, one of the seven castaways on the sitcom Gilligan's Island.  Gilligan's Island ran on CBS from 1964 to 1967.  It was created by Sherwood Schwartz, who also created The Brady Bunch.  Dawin appeared in 98 of Gilligan's Island's  99 episodes.  She did not appear in the pilot episode, "Marooned," which was filmed in November of 1963, but was not shown on television until almost 30 years later, on October 16, 1992.

Dawn's character, Mary Ann, was sweet and thoughtful, the girl next door.  In contrast, Tina Louise's character, Ginger, was exotic and glamorous.

Below is a 1964 photo of Dawn Wells as MaryAnn in Gilligan's Island.

After Gilligan's Island, Dawn concentrated on a theatre career.  As of July 2009, she had appeared in almost a hundred stage productions, including Neil Simon's Chapter Two and the musical version of Neil Simon's book They're Playing Our Song, with music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Carol Bayer Sager.

Due to her theatrical tours, Dawn's accepted fewer television roles during the 1970s and 1980s.  In the 1970s, She appeared as Mary Ann Summers in two Gilligan's Island TV movies: Rescue from Gilligan's Island (1978) and The Castaways on Gilligan's Island (1979).  She also appeared in a 1978 episode of the crime/drama series, Vega$, entitled "Serve, Volley and Kill" (Season 1, Episode 11, Air Date: December 20, 1978).

In the 1980s, Dawn guest-starred in a two-part episode of The Love Boat (1980) , a 1981 episode of Fantasy Island a 1983 episode of Matt Houston and two 1987 episodes of Growing Pains.  She also reprised her Mary Ann role in a 1981 TV movie called The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island and portrayed Miss Lorilee Lee in High School U.S.A., a 1983 TV movie.

In the 1990s, Dawn appeared as Mary Ann Summers in an episode of Baywatch (1992) and she guest-starred in an episode of Columbo (1993).  She also appeared as Mary Ann as part of a Gilligan's Island fantasy in a 1995 episode of Roseanne entitled "Sherwood Schwartz - A Loving Tribute" (Season 7, Episode 25, Air Date: May 24, 1995).

In the 2000s, Dawn continued to make TV acting appearances.  In 2001, she guest-starred in an episode of Three Sisters, a comedy about a man whose two sisters-law move in with him and his wife.  In 2007, Dawn played Kathryn in two episodes of the comedy series Pastor Greg

Dawn portrayed Annie Hughes in the 2017 television move Life Interrupted, a comedy about a man named Mason Bell, played by Mason Reese.  Mason lives in a studio apartment above a New York City bar, which he owns with his ex-wife.

In 2016, Dawn made a special guest appearance on the  CBS daytime drama, The Bold and the Beautiful.  She portrayed Alice, a wealthy friend of the soap opera's longtime lead character, Eric Forrester, played by John McCook.

In 2018, Dawn made guest-starred on a short-lived TV comedy called Kaplan's Corner, about a group of struggling actors who inherit an employment agency.  Dawn played herself in an episode of the series entitled "Marvin's Ghost" (Season 1, Episode 3, Air Date: October 19, 2018).

In 2018, Dawn found herself in serious financial trouble due to the medical costs she had incurred from a fall.  A GoFundMe page was set up to help her raise money to deal with her financial woes.  She told Fox News about following comment to a dear friend of hers, who created the page: "Where did the time go?  I don't know how this happened.  I thought I was taking all the proper steps to ensure my golden years.  Now, here I am, no family, no husband, no kids and no money."

In June of 2020, Dawn's manager divulged in court court documents that the actress was suffering from dementia.  The following December, he died in Los Angeles of causes related to the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping California.  Dawn is survived by her stepsister, Weslee Wells.

In a statement to CNN, Tina Louise paid tribute to her former castmate with these words:

"I was saddened to hear of Dawn's death.  I will always remember her kindness to me."

"We shared in creating a cultural landmark that has continued to bring comfort and smiles during this difficult time.  I hope that people will remember her as I do - always with a smile on her face."

Keeping Up With Susan Saint James

"This lovable, large-eyed brunette was a surefire audience pleaser playing somewhat kooky, mildly klutzy and generally free-spirited types on TV, and in the occasional film, since the mid-1960s.  The typical Saint James character was a beautiful innocent who would boldly stumble in where more sober types feared to tread."

- Turner Classic Movies (TCM) Biography

Susan Saint James is best known for her role as Sally McMillan in the television detective series McMillan & Wife, alongside Rock Hudson.  She is also recognized for her role as Peggy Maxwell in The Name of the Game and Kate McArdle in the sitcom Kate & Allie.

Susan was born Susan Jane Miller in Los Angeles, California on August 14, 1946 to a Connecticut family.  She is the daughter of Charles Daniel Miller (1915-1993), a businessman, and Constance (Geiger) Miller (1915-2011), a teacher.  Susan was raised in Rockford, Illinois, where she began modelling in her teens.  She attended the Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest, Illinois, a private Catholic girls' high school north of Chicago, and later studied at the Connecticut College for Women (now Connecticut College) in New London, Connecticut.

After moving to California, Susan launched her television acting career with a role in the 1966 TV movie Fame is the Name of the Game, starring Tony Framciosa.  This lea to her first television series, The Name of the Game, which debuted in 1968 and was based on the TV movie.

Susan also guest-starred in two 1960s episodes of the detective series Ironside, starring Raymond Burr.  The first episode, "Girl in the Night" (Season 1, Episode 14), aired on December 21, 1967.  The second episode, "Something for Nothing" (Season 1, Episode 22), aired on February 22, 1968.

In 1967, Susan Saint James had a minor role in the pilot for It Takes a Thief.  When It Takes a Thief became a successful crime-caper series (starring Robert Wagner as the suave Alexander Mundy), Susan was cast in the recurring role of Charlene "Charlie" Brown, .Mundy's fellow thief and sometime love interest.  She appeared as Charlene Brown in four episodes from 1968 until 1970. In the early 1970s, she went on to make guest appearances in episodes of McCloud  (1970) and Alias Smith and Jones (1971).

From 1968 to 1971, Susan portrayed editorial assistant Peggy Maxwell in the adventure series The Name of the Game.  The Name of the Game was a groundbreaking series, staring Tony Framciosa, Robert Sack and Gene Barry.  The show was innovative in that it featured independent episodes tied together by one common theme, Howard Publications, the publishing empire of Glen Howard (Gene Barry).  Susan's character, Peggy, provided a common link between the lead characters.  She won an Emmy Award for her role.

Below is a 1969 photo of Susan as research assistant Peggy Maxwell in The Name of the Game.

When The Name of the Game ended, Susan took on her next important role, that of Sally McMillan, the young, crime-fighting wife of San Francisco police commissioner Stuart "Mac" McMillan, played by Rock Hudson.  McMillan & Wife (known as McMillan from 1976 to 1977) aired on NBC from 1971 to 1977.  Although Hudson was old enough to be Susan's father, audiences liked the easy chemistry between them.

Susan won four Emmy nominations for her role as Sally.  However, due to a contract dispute, Susan left McMillan & Wife in 1976.  The show underwent a major retooling during its sixth and final season and was renamed McMillan.  Susan's character, Sally McMillan, was killed in a plane crash, along with the couple's never-seen son, Mac.

In the 21st century, Susan continued to appear occasionally in television acting roles.  She guest-starred as defence attorney Monica Bradshaw in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.  The episode is entitled "Gone" (Season 7, Episode 16, Air Date; February 28, 2006).  Susan also played Joy McAfferty in a 2011 episode of the comedy/drama Suits entitled "Bail Out (Season 1, Episode 5 (Air Date: July 21, 2011).  Most recently, she had a recurring role as an old woman on some 2020 episodes of Upload, an afterlife comedy/science fiction series on Amazon.

Susan Saint James has been married three times, divorced twice, and has given birth to five children.  On July 8, 1967, at the age of 20, she wed writer-director Richard Neubert.  The marriage only lasted until September of 1968,  In 1971, Susan married for a second time, to Thomas Lucas, a makeup artist.  The couple had a daughter, Sunshine Lucas (born May 6, 1972) and a son, Harmony Lucas (born November 10, 1974).  They divorced in 1977.

On November 21, 1981, Susan wed her third husband, American television director Dick Ebersol.  She met Dick in 1981, when she hosted Saturday Night Live (SNL).   He was the executive producer of SNL at the time.  In March of 2002, Susan filed for divorce from  Ebersol, but the couple reconciled later that year.  Until May of 2011, Dick was chairman of NBC Sports.

Dick Ebersol

Susan and Dick had three sons, Charles (Charlie), William and Edward (Teddy).  Teddy Ebersol, their youngest child, was born on June 10, 1990.  Susan was 43 years old when she gave birth to him.

On November 28, 2004, tragedy struck Susan's family.  A private plane, with Dick and  sons Charlie and Teddy aboard, crashed during an attempted takeoff from Montrose Regional Airport in Colorado.  Dick and Charlie survived but 14-year-old Teddy died, along with the pilot and flight attendant.  Charlie came to the aid of his father, who was under a mile of rubble and was seriously injured.  Unfortunately, Charlie was unable to find his brother.  Twi days after the crash, rescue workers discovered the bodies of Teddy and the two crew members.  Two weeks after the accident, Susan appeared on Today and thanked people for all the love and support given to her family during such a devastating time.

Y&R Report (December 11, 2021): The Latest on The Young and the Restless

Hey Y&R fans, every second Saturday TV Banter discusses the latest happenings and provides commentary on your favourite daytime drama. Note to U.S. readers - SPOILER ALERT: Here in Canada, I watch the show on Global TV which is one episode ahead of CBS.  I will inevitably refer to incidents you haven't seen yet.  Read at your own risk.  If you are the curious type, though, you may prefer to discover some things in advance

Hi fans,

First, a note to readers: I am going to take a short Christmas break.  I will be back in the New Year.  My Y&R column will return to this space on Saturday, January 8, 2022.

Now that Abby (Melissa Ordway) and Chance (Conner Floyd) have reunited, don't expect everything to go smoothly for them.  Y&R is not a fairytale.  It's a soap and soaps have few "happily ever after" stories - unless the couple involved is leaving town or the show.  Kyle and Summer are a prime example.  They got married and began a new life in Italy.  However, if they ever return to Genoa City, you can be sure that they will encounter some serious difficulties and they will likely break up.  In the  case of Abby and Chance, there are already dark clouds on the horizon.  Chance is experiencing deep emotional problems as a result of his ordeal in Spain. He's not having an easy time adjusting to life back in Genoa City.  Devon and Mariah are still very much in the picture. They are not going to give up their attachment to Dominic.  Mariah has been pretending that she is not so obsessed with "Bowie."  However, it is obvious by the expressions on her face that she wants to be a mother to the child.  As for Devon, he has developed a deep bond with Dominic and really enjoyed playing daddy when Abby was in Spain.  We all know that there will be trouble ahead.

In her recent interview with JLJ Media, Melissa Ordway made it clear that she doesn't expect Chance and Abby to just pick up where they left off before Chance took off on his mission to save the world..  "I'm not sure how that's going to go," she said.  "I think its going to be a lot more dramatic than, 'Hey, you're back.  Cool!  We're in love again, we're gonna raise this baby and its gonna be happily ever after.'"

Now that Abby and Chance's baby has been mentioned, let me just say is that I'm so glad that they have finally cast a real child in the role of Dominic, just in time for Chance's return.  The Blanket Baby is gone forever.  Thank heaven and good riddance!  By the way, the human baby is very cute.

So, now we know why Victor Newman doesn't like Billy Abbott.  He thinks Billy's had it too easy, that he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth.  Victor is proud of the fact hat he scratched and clawed his way to success in business.  He was sent to an orphanage and worked hard to make something of himself.  However, I think Victor is too judgmental where Billy Boy is concerned.  He should be reminded that his own children were also born with silver spoons in their mouths and a sense of entitlement.  The only exception is Adam, who was raised in more humble surroundings on Hope's farm in Kansas.

As for Adam Newman, it seems to me that he is reverting to the old Adam.  What has happened to the new and improved Adam?  As Billy pointed out, he's still holding grudges.  It must be Victor's influence because he's been working so closely with his ruthless father.

I hope that they get Amanda's sister, Imani, into a good storyline.  I also hope that the writers will eventually create a good triangle involving her and Dr. Nate and Elena.  Speaking of triangles, it looks like there's one involving Noah and Tessa and Mariah.  You can see how Mariah is eying Tessa and Noah and how Noah is eying Maria and Tessa.  It will be interesting to see how that plays out.

So, Ashland Locke has received good news about his cancer treatments.  That's not surprising.  Don't expect him to die anytime soon.  Richard Burgi, who plays Ashland,  is too popular with fans,  He's not going anywhere right now.

Why did Jack put the breaks on his relationship with Phyllis?  Is he really afraid that she will hurt him again or is there some other reason?   Is Phyllis really going to accept Jack's decision so easily?  Why isn't Phyllis scheming to get him back?  When has she ever been known to behave in such a mature manner?

It was great to see Kate Linder (Esther Valentine) back on camera.  Kate was hospitalized after an injury she incurred while taking care of her elderly mother.  As a result, Esther hadn't been seen in a while.  She told Sharon that she had been busy looking after her grandchildren, Bell and Miles, while Kevin and Chloe worked.  Good to see you again, Kate!

Christian LeBlanc celebrates 30 years on Y&R

Christian LeBlanc has just celebrated 30 years of portraying Genoa City lawyer Michael Baldwin on The Young and the Restless.  To celebrate this landmark anniversary, Y&R will air a special episode dedicated to him in January of 2022.

Sasha Calle (Lola Rosales) has left Y&R for now

Genoa City is going to miss Lola's famous chicken soup.  When Lola left for Miami, it was only supposed to be a temporary move.  Now we know       that she's staying there because she's  found her dream job in Florida.  Abby was left high and dry and had to find a new chef to replace Lola at Society.  So, Lola is gone.  Oh well, she didn't have much of a storyline anyway.  She was just cutting vegetables in the kitchen and giving advice to her roommate, Elena.

The truth is that Sasha Calle, who played Lola, has taken on the role of Supergirl in the upcoming movie The Flash.  She is the first Latina to play the part of Supergirl.

It is not known whether Sasha will return to Y&R,  Her departure means that Jordi Vilasuso, who plays Lola's brother, Rey, is the only member of the Rosales family still on the show.

Y&R Report (November 27, 2021): The Latest on The Young and the Restless

Hey Y&R fans, every second Saturday TV Banter discusses the latest happenings and provides commentary on your favourite daytime drama. Note to U.S. readers - SPOILER ALERT: Here in Canada, I watch the show on Global TV which is one episode ahead of CBS.  I will inevitably refer to incidents you haven't seen yet.  Read at your own risk.  If you are the curious type, though, you may prefer to discover some things in advance

Hi fans,

There's not quite as much to write about because we've had a short week on The Young and the Restless.  Due to American Thanksgiving, the show was not seen on Thursday, November 25, 2021 or Friday, November 26, 2021 on CBS.  On November 25th, there was an encore presentation of Victoria and Ashland's wedding.  Y&R was  preempted on November 24th and November 25th on Global TV

Well, Victoria and Ashland definitely want to become the newest power couple in Genoa City.  They are acting like a younger version of Victor and Nikki Newman.  It seems that Victoria is calling the shouts and leading the way.  That's not a surprise because of all Victor's children, her behaviour most resembles her father's.  She is a cutthroat businesswoman.  She and Ashland just waltzed into Billy and Lily's office and offered to buy their company.  Princess Victoria takes great delight in the prospect of acquiring ChancCom.

Victoria and Ashland praised Lily and were highly critical of Billy.  They want Lily to run ChancCom on her own, without Billy. They dangled the prospect of career success and being CEO of her own company to Lily.  Lily, however, is dubious about accepting their offer.  She doesn't want to fall into a trap. or make a huge mistake.  She knows it's Jill's call anyway.  That's why she phoned Jill to discuss the situation.

Poor Billy Boy Abbott!  He can't help himself.  He is his own worst enemy.  Even when he tries to do something noble, such as resign from ChancCom and let Lily take over, he can't win.  He didn't consult with Lily before making such a momentous decision.  Lily berated him for that.  Billy just doesn't have good judgement.  However, according to an online spoiler and previews, Billy's mother, Jill, will be arriving in town soon and she will take command of the situation.

Faith is back in the swing of things - finally!  It was good to see her have a heart-to-heart conversation with her brother, Noah.  It was about time that Noah really opened up to someone.  He's really been a drag sitting around at home.  Speaking of Noah Newman, I wouldn't be surprised if he and Tessa become romantically involved?  Why?  First, they seem to have a lot in common.  They both like music and art.  Secondly, if those two hooked up, it would create a conflict between Mariah and Noah.  Remember that they are half siblings.  Their mother is Sharon.

The Thanksgiving episode featuring Phyllis and Gloria was hilarious.  It was some much-needed comic relief after all the drama surrounding Chance's disappearance and baby Dominic.  I really enjoyed it.  It showed some real insight into the mind of Phyllis.  Gloria was funny as "Golden Glo."

I'm very pleased to be seeing more of Eileen Davidson lately as Ashley Abbott.  She one of the show's anchors and her presence is very welcome as far as her fans are concerned.

Those of us who watch Y&R on Global TV saw the first scene with the new Chance, played by Conner Floyd.  I will reserve judgement on Conner until I've seen more of him.  His style seems different from the other actors who have played Chance.  He seems less military the others and more bohemian, with longish curly hair.

Much to Abby's disappointment, Chance seems adamant that he won't come home until he brings down the bad guys who killed his colleagues.  Here's what I think may happen.  Abby will go home alone and pretend that has accepted that Chance is dead.  Once he brings down the bad the guys, he will return to Genoa City, but will remain in hiding in order to protect himself and Abby and Dominic.  Devon and Mariah and the others with continue to believe that Chance is gone.  This will cause plenty of conflict, especially where Mariah is concerned.  Chance will eventually return home.  The powers that be at Y&R did not select a new Chance so that he remain in Spain.

Y&R seems to be taking its time to pay tribute to Jerry Douglas, who portrayed John Abbott, the patriarch of the Abbott family, for many years.  They have shown a photo of him with his birth and death dates at the end of an episode.

Hi fans,

Have you noticed that Faith Newman (Reylynn Carter) and Moses Winters (Jacob Aaron Gaines) haven't had much screen time lately?  I know that the focus has been on Victoria and Ashland's wedding and on the Abby-Chance storyline.  Still, those two young lovebirds have really been in the background.  With Noah back in town, you'd think that Faith would be in scenes with the brother she hasn't seen for a long time.

Speaking of Noah, I can't quite figure what direction the writers are taking him.  All we know is that someone in London broke his heart.  He seems to be hanging out a lot with Tessa and Mariah.  I thought he might get romantically involved with Tessa.  However, it appears that the writers seemed to have backed away from that, at least for the time being.  It might still happen if Tessa loses patience with Mariah's obsession with baby Dominic.  Tessa is not on the same page with her on that.

Mariah is way out  of line where Dominic is concerned.  As much as she feels a connection to the child, she has to face the reality that Abby is his mother.  She is doing herself no favours by hovering over him.  If Chance is declared dead, I wouldn't be surprised if she takes legal action to gain custody of her "Bowie."  Tess will not be on board with that.

There weren't any Halloween parties or costumes on Y&R again this year.  I was disappointed about that, but there must be a reason.  It might have something to do with COVID.

I quite enjoyed watching that heart-to heart talk that Nick had with Victoria.  They really opened up to each other as siblings.  It was rather touching.

If you're not convinced that Chance is really dead, you are definitely on the right track,  Chance is returning to Genoa City, but he wont be played by Donny Boaz (In the CAST NEWS section of this Y&R Report, you will find a brief biography of the new Chance.  That's right.  There will finally be a new Chance and it's about time).

What will Chance's return mean for the storyline?  What will await him when he finally comes home?  Will Abby give up all hope of seeing him alive again?  Maybe a body will be wrongly identified as Chance's, so she will go on with her life, only to discover that her husband is still alive.. There is going to be quite a showdown, legally and emotionally, over custody of that poor baby Dominic.  Both Devon and Mariah could eventually seek custody of him since they  are booth extremely attached to the child.

Abby doesn't seem to be able to cope with looking after Dominic and dealing with her grief over Chance.  She ended up at Devon's doorstep asking for help.  Now Devon is looking after the baby and Abby has taken off somewhere.  My guess is that she's headed tp Spain to look for Chance.  She still has hope that he's still alive.  She's right, too, but this is a soap opera.  The question is this: If Abby does go to Spain, will she find him or will he return later?

So far. Amanda seems very supportive of Devon's connection to Dominic and Abby.  I still have a problem with Devon and Amanda.  Wouldn't it feel weird having a relationship with someone who looks exactly like your dead spouse.  Amanda may be a dead ringer for her identical twin but her personality is quite different from Hillary's.  I think the bond between Devon and Hilary was much stronger.

Is it finally over between Phyllis and Nick?  I hope so.  Those two are not in sync.  Their relationship has run its course.  Phyllis will never accept Nick's ties to his family and Nick will always be a Newman.  That will never change.  Nick needs someone who has more in common with him and accepts his family situation.  I think he is best suited to Sharon.  Notice how often he has been confiding in her lately.  Their son, Noah, even commented that he didn't think Nick had ever really gotten over Sharon.  Having said that, I don't think the time is right for a Nick and Sharon reunion yet.  There are too many complications, such as Sharon's marriage to Rey and her fixation on Adam.  It may happen someday, when she inevitably breaks up with Rey.

Here's another thing I've thought about.  Sally Spectra might go after Nick, just for revenge against Phyllis and to make his brother Adam jealous.  I wouldn't put it past Sally.  I just don't know if Nick would be interested in hooking up with her.  However, Nicholas usually shows poor judgement where women are concerned.

Sally should take Jack's sage advice.  He told her to o stop complaining and to stop acting as if everyone were against her.  He was spot-on with those words of wisdom.   She's got to put an end to her "Poor Sally" attitude.

Some Y&R fans felt that Ashland Locke was faking his death.  I think we can put that theory to rest.  The media mogul has clearly experienced pain with no one else was around.  Why would he pretend to be dying in that situation?

Once again, Victor Newman has won.  As he would  say, he has crushed Billy Boy.  He and Adam are threatening to bring down Chancellor Communications.  They were able to get Jesse Gaines on their side and they completely fooled Billy Abbott.  I've got to believe that Victoria and Ashland are in on Victor and Adam's scheme too.  Victor wouldn't do anything to hurt his princess.

Billy will be facing a lot of music.  Lily has just about had enough of his shenanigans.  Not only that, but Billy's mother, Jill (Jess Walton), will be coming home for a visit.  According to an online spoiler, "she will make some stunning business decisions."  Jill's  decisions will probably involve ChancComm and I doubt Billy will be pleased.

Hi Joanne

My comment for this week is related to how poorly baby Dominic is portrayed.  Wrapped in the same blue-striped swaddling blanket day after day, this cannot be the long-awaited, much-adored son and grandson of multi-millionaire parents and grandparents.

They should consider the impact of this sad visual on the amount of empathy the audience can muster up for Abby.

There must be a life-like baby doll hidden somewhere in the prop room that could be used!

Major gaffe by the powers that be!

- CC from Etobicoke

You are absolutely right, CC.  Surely Y&R can do better than that.  It's what you'd expect from an amateur production.  Do they think that viewers haven't noticed that Dominic is just a fake blanket baby?  What a joke!  The baby's crying is so phony too.  How shoddy!  The only valid excuse for not using a real baby is COVID regulations.  If, that's the case, they could use a life-like doll, as you suggest.  At the very least, they could change poor Dominic's blanket.  Sooner of later, they are going to have to get rid of that blue-striped one.  This certainly is a major gaffe by the powers that be.  I wouldn't be surprised if at the end of a scene, the actors laugh and toss around that ridiculous blanket baby.

Whatever happened to Mike Lookinland of The Brady Bunch?

The problem for me was, I lived my childhood in my 20s.  You should really live your childhood when you're a child, because if you do it when you're 26, it can be dangerous.

- Mike Lookinland, video clip from "Oprah Where are they now?"

Mike Lookinland, who played Bobby Brady, the youngest Brady son on The Brady Bunch, has kept a lower profile than the actors who portrayed the other Brady children.  He fled the Hollywood scene and eventually became a successful businessman.

Michael Paul Lookinland was born to a Mormon family in Mount Pleasant, Utah on December 19, 1960.  Mike was the second of the three children of  Paul Lookinland and his wife, Karen.  Mike had two siblings, an older sister named Theresa and a younger brother, Todd.  His father, Paul, was a junior high school principal in Carson, California.

By the age of seven, Mike was acting n television commercials for products such as Cheerios cereal, toys and Band-Aid bandages.  He was actually offered two sitcom roles - Eddie Corbitt on The Courtship of Eddie's Father and Bobby Brady on The Brady Bunch.  His parents chose the The Brady Bunch, and the part of Eddie was given to Brandon Cruz.  Mike's parents believed that it was better for their son to be around children his own age than to be the only child in an adult cast.

Mike was 9 years old when he was cast as Robert "Bobby" Brady.  The Brady Bunch was created by Sherwood Schwartz, who also created Gilligan's Island.  The series aired for five seasons, from 1969 until 1974 on the ABC network but did not attain great popularity until it went into syndication.

Mike Lookinland appeared in all 117 episodes of The Brady Bunch.  When he was cast as Bobby, Mike was told that he would have to dye his hair.  Mike's hair was naturally sandy and wavy.  HIs strawberry blond locks were darkened and straightened in order to match the hair of his TV brothers, Barry Williams, (Greg Brady) and Christopher Knight (Peter Brady}.  During the final two seasons of The Brady Bunch, however, Mike's natural hair colour was allowed to be shown.

In a 2019 interview with the New York Post, Mike stated the following: :"It was very strange for a nine-year old boy to go to school one morning with red hair then show up on Monday with jet-black hair."  Although the series was about a blended family consisting of a blond mother with three blond daughter and a dark-haired dad with three dark-haired sons, Mike claims it was never presented to him that way.  As a child, he disliked dying his hair and found it weird.

In the 1970s, Mike Lookinland attended Chadwick School, an independent school on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles County, California.  He graduated from Chadwick in 1978.  During his time on The Brady Bunch, Mike studied at Hollywood Professional School along with his Brady Bunch  siblings Maureen McCormick (Marcia Brady), Christopher Knight and Susan Olsen (Cindy Brady).

Below is the cast of The Brady Bunch as featured in the shows opening theme.  Top to Bottom, from left to right: Maureen McCormick, Florence Hendrson (Carol Brady), Barry Williams, Eve Plumb (Jan Brady), Ann B. Davis (Alice), Christopher Knight, Susan Olsen, Robert Reed and Mike Lookinland.

Mike remained with The Brady Bunch until the series ended in 1974.  Soon after its cancellation, he appeared as Phillip Albright in the 1974 disaster film The Towering InfernoThe Towering Inferno was a blockbuster hit with a stellar ensemble cast including, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Faye Dunaway and Jennifer Jones, Fred Astaore. Robert Vaughn, Robert Wagner, Richard Chamberlain, Susan Blakely and yes, O.J. Simpson.

After The Tower Inferno, 20th Century Fox wanted to cast Mike Lookinland in a new TV series called Swiss Family Robinson. Mike turned down the offer because he and his schoolmates had planned to go on a ski trip.  He told the producer that he hadn't had a vacation in six years and that he didn't want to do the show.  He soon learned that you "don't turn down work in Hollywood if you want to get work in Hollywood."  According to Mike, nobody called him again after that.

Mike appeared in a 1975 episode of the The Secret of Isis, a fantasy superhero series.  He portrayed Tom Anderson in an episode of the show entitled "How to Find a Friend" (Season 1, Episode 8, Air Date: October 25, 1975).  Mike also guest-starred in a 1977 episode of the family drama Little House on the Prairie.  He played Patrick, a boy on a train, in an episode entitled "Times of Change" (Season 4, Episode 2, Air Date: September 19, 1977).

Mike on Little House on the Prairie

After graduating from high school, 17-year-old Mike decided to leave Hollywood and move to Salt Lake City to attend the University of Utah.  He met his future wife while they were both attending the university and he put down roots in Utah.  He dropped out of college in order to pursue a career as a production assistant and camera operator.

In a 2019 interview with Desert News, Mike said, "I wanted to get out of L.A., get away from agents and managers.  And just to be a kid in the mountains."  It was an attempt on Mike's part to live his life outside of the public eye.

Despite Mike's escape from Hollywood, everything did not go smoothly for him,  Like many a child star, he had a difficult struggle with alcoholism.  After The Brady Bunch ended, he began drinking and became addicted.  "I loved alcohol," he said in a video clip from "Oprah Where are they now?'"  "First time I had a drink, oh boy, I thought it was the greatest thing in the world."  Everything came to a head on the evening of November 9, 1997.  Mike was leaving the set of Promised Land in St. George, Utah, where he was employed as an assistant cameraman.  As he drove along Utah State Route 18, he approached a curve and drifted onto the left shoulder.. While attempting to steer back onto the pavement, he rolled off the right side of the road.

Mike sustained cuts and bruises as a result of the accident.  It turned out that his blood alcohol content was over three times Utah's legal limit.  He was treated in hospital and then booked into Washington County Jail, but was released on bail.  In December pf 1997, Mike completed a court-ordered rehabilitation program.  On May 27, 1998, he was sentenced to 24 hours of community service and fined $1,500.  The drunk driving incident was a wake up call for Mike and he sobered up.  "When it became clear that the choice was between living or dying, then it became a simple choice for me," he stated in the Oprah video.

Mike is a "Deadhead," a huge fan of the band the Grateful Dead.  He says his interest in the group began the day before New Year's in 1978.  Since that time, he has attended over 100 Grateful Dead concerts and shows.

Another band, Wonderful Broken Thing, titled their 1989 album Looking For Mike Lookinland.

On May 1, 1987 (some sources say May 11), Mike married his college sweetheart, Kelly Wemuth (born 1962), a sometime actor..  The couple have two sons, Scott Michael  Lookinland (born July 6, 1990) and Joseph Kelly "Joe" Lookinland (born August 6, 1993.  Both sons were born in Utah.

Mike eventually left the entertainment business behind.  After working in film production  for 20 years, he decided to change course.  One day, his wife, Kelly, brought home a library book that caught his attention.  The book's title was How to Make Concrete Countertops.  Mike made up his mind to do just that.  He told his wife that he intended to quit his job and make concrete countertops for a living.

Mike Lookinland now operates a business in Salt Lake City that produces decorative concrete  He is satisfied with the artistic and creative aspect of  designing concrete countertops.  The former child star enjoys living in Utah and says he hasn't even thought about gong anywhere else.  He is impressed by the quality of life in the state.

Y&R Report (October 30, 2021): The Latest on The Young and the Restless

Hey Y&R fans, every second Saturday TV Banter discusses the latest happenings and provides commentary on your favourite daytime drama. Note to U.S. readers - SPOILER ALERT: Here in Canada, I watch the show on Global TV which is one episode ahead of CBS.  I will inevitably refer to incidents you haven't seen yet.  Read at your own risk.  If you are the curious type, though, you may prefer to discover some things in advance

Hi fans,

Here are some final thoughts about the wedding in Tuscany.  Did the writers think we wouldn't notice that almost no one went to the reception?  They didn't even bother to show the event.  We didn't see Victoria and Ashland cut the cake, nor did we see the bride throw the bouquet.  It was mentioned later that concert pianist Leslie Brooks caught the flowers.  No wonder!  By my count, she was the only single woman there.  In fact, other than Victor and Nikki, she was the only person there.  The others all decided to skip the reception, including Sally Spectra, who was busy making a play for Adam.  I don't think anyone would have beaten Sally to the bouquet if she had been there.

Adam managed to resist Sally's advances, probably because his heart is still with Sharon.  We all know that Sally is one very determined woman and that she doesn't give up easily.  However, it will be a huge challenge to pry Adam away from Sharon,  Sharon, will do everything in her power to prevent Sally and Adam from hooking up.

When Billy was asking Rey's assistance in finding out what happened to the missing Jesse Gaines, Asland's arch-enemy, Sharon just had to find out what was going on.  It didn't take her long to confront Billy and come to Adam's defence.  It's so obvious where Sharon's heart and her loyalties lie.  They are 100 per cent with Adam.  Of course, that incident led to yet another argument between Sharon and Rey over Sharon's interest in Adam.

So, Sally has made quite a few enemies in Genoa City - Phyllis, Nick, Nikki . . .The latest person she has alienated is Lauren Fenmore.  Lauren is understandably livid that Sally prevented Victoria from wearing the weeing dress that she designed.  Next on the list will be Chelsea.  She won't want Sally and Adam together.

Sally just can't help herself and she hasn't done herself any favours by taking a photo of Jack and Phyllis looking cozy together.  Nick and Phyllis are on the verge of breaking up.  They're just not on the same page.  Sally's photo will deliver the finishing blow.  It's just a matter of time and Phyllis will be with Jack again.  As for Nick, he might try another go-round with Chelsea.  I would suggest a reunion with Sharon, but she's too busy with Adam and Rey.

Although Phyllis and Nick have tried to talk over their issues, they are just going around in circles.  Phyllis thinks Nick is too wrapped up in his family's problems.  Nick can't stop getting involved with the Newman dramas, especially the latest one concerning the unfortunate Jesse Gaines.  What in tarnation has Victor Newman done with Gaines?  Whatever it is, it isn't pretty, although Nikki doesn't seem to be overly concerned about it.  Adam, who professes to be a changed man, has gone along with Victor's dictates.

What is going on with Chance?.  Is he really dead?  Somehow, I don't think so, although it certainly seems that way.  I realize that Abby identified Chance's watch and his wedding ring.  However, his body has not been found.  Perhaps it will never be found or maybe a body will be wrongly identified as Chance's and he will show up later.  Will Abby start an new life without her husband, only to discover that he is still alive?

I received some comments from longtime Y&R viewer, CC in Etobicoke.  CC wrote the following:

It looks to me like Victoria and Ashland are playing each other.  They are keeping up the sham of love until one triumphs over the other by getting all of the new company.  From the get-go, Victoria said if she won the bid for Ashland's company she was going to let Billy run it.  That was going to be her key to get him away from Lily since nothing else was working.

I still do not believe that Ashland has cancer.

We' will see what happens.

Could Ashland and Victoria both really be that phony?  I doubt it, but if you are right, CC, I will give you a lot of credit for calling it.  I do agree that Billy and Victoria still have feelings for each other.  Also, if Ashland doesn't have terminal cancer, he won't have to die and leave the show.  His death would really disappoint many fans.
