Y&R Report (June 17th, 2023): The Latest on The Young and the Restless

Hey Y&R fans, every second Saturday TV Banter discusses the latest happenings and provides commentary on your favourite daytime drama. Note to U.S. readers - SPOILER ALERT: Here in Canada, I watch the show on Global TV, which is one episode ahead of CBS.  I will inevitably refer to incidents you haven't seen yet.  Read at your own risk.  If you are the curious type, though, you may prefer to discover some things in advance.

Hi fans,
What a week on the Y&R!  Bad guy Cameron continued to torment Sharon, Faith and Nick.  When he tried to make Nick choose between letting Faith or Sharon die, Sharon took matters into her own hands and stabbed him with a knife that she had hidden on her.  Faith had a belt of explosives around her waist. There were some tense moments, but Chance, with his military training was able to prevent an explosion.
Now that Cameron is gone, Linden Ashby, the actor who played him, has finished his time on the show. I must say, he played a psycho very well.

In addition to Cameron terrifying Sharon and her family, Adam was given an agonizing choice by Dr. Elena.  He was told that an unconscious Sally would probably not survive unless she had a C-Section. Sally survived. but the premature baby was lost.  Actually, I didn't think the child would be born because Sally's storyline would be more restricted if she had a child.  I didn't think motherhood was in the cards for her.  Many questions remain, though; Will Sally blame Nick for not being there in her hour of need?  Will she determine that Nick will always put Sharon and Faith before her?  Will this eventually draw her closer to Adam as they both mourn the loss of their child?  Right now she is blaming him for allowing the child to be put at risk.

Is there a more foolish character on Y&R than Summer?  Is there a more selfish character than Phyllis?  I really don't think Summer would be so stupid as to run away and hide with her mother.  It's being done for storyline purposes.
Now it seems that Audra Charles is trying to get her hooks into Kyle Abbott now that Kyle is disillusioned with Summer.  Audra is like a vulture.  When sees and opportunity, when a man is vulnerable, she starts making moves.

It appears that Chance is the only cop in Genoa City.  Have you noticed that he doesn't even have a backup in dangerous situations?  That would never happen in the real world.  Also, we never see the GC police station anymore and we don't know who has replaced Paul Williams now that he has retired as chief of police.

What happened to J.T. Hellstrom (Thad Luckinbill)?  It appeared that he was going to return to Genoa City for a while as part of Audra's scheme to up Victoria.  He even showed up in a video chat.  Yet he hasn't been mentioned since.  What's going on?  Do the writers think that viewers have forgotten?  Maybe he's still going to show up, but it seems unlikely now.

There will be a special tribute episode to the late Jerry Douglas, who portrayed John Abbott, the patriarch of the Abbott family for more than 25 years.  Given that Jerry died on November 9, 2021 (at the age of 88), the tribute is long overdo - but better late than never.  Perhaps Y&R was waiting for the 50th anniversary of the show to honour the veteran actor.  Maybe a number of fans complained that the show had neglected to honour him.  Kate Linder (Esther) has said many times to send your complaints or suggestions to CBS.  There is a  place on the CBS website for fans to express themselves.

The tribute to Jerry Douglas will be shown on Thursday, June 22 on CBS and Wednesday, June 21 on Global TV.  I will definitely be watching.

The Hollywood writers strike may eventually shut down Y&R and the other soaps.  I spoke to Cait Fairbanks (Tessa Porter) at the Y&R March of Dimes Tea in Toronto.  She said the show will go on as long as the members of SAG (Screen Actors Guild) don't go on strike in solidarity with the writers.

Kate Linder (Esther), Bryton James (Devon), Brytni Sarrpy (Elena) and Cait Fairbanks attended the tea.  Christian LeBlanc (Michael) and Camryn Grimes (Mariah) were supposed to be there, but were unable to attend.  It was an enjoyable afternoon,  However, it was the last such event in support of March of Dimes.  We were told that there will be a new charity, but we will have to wait for more information about a future Y&R tea.

Brett Hadley (Carl Williams) dies at 92

Longtime Y&R viewers will remember Brett Hadley, who played Genoa City police detective Carl Williams, the father of Paul Williams (Doug Davidson).  The actor died of sepsis on June 14, 2023.  He was 92 years old.  Brett first joined Y&R as Carl Williams back in 1980 and stayed with the show until 1991, when his character mysteriously disappeared. Brett returned to Y&R in 1998, and it was revealed that Carl had been beaten up and suffered from amnesia.  Bred Hadley left Y&R again in 1999.

Y&R Report (June 3, 2023): The Latest on The Young and the Restless

Hey Y&R fans, every second Saturday TV Banter discusses the latest happenings and provides commentary on your favourite daytime drama. Note to U.S. readers - SPOILER ALERT: Here in Canada, I watch the show on Global TV, which is one episode ahead of CBS.  I will inevitably refer to incidents you haven't seen yet.  Read at your own risk.  If you are the curious type, though, you may prefer to discover some things in advance.

Hi fans,
Well, Nate Hastings has certainly changed since he left the medical profession - and not for the better.  He's become cold and calculating.  He's driven by blind ambition.  Success in the business world has gone to his head.  Maybe former girlfriend Elena is right.  That was his true character all along.  It came to the surface when he became a businessman.  At any rate, he has never been the same man since he stopped performing surgery, thanks to a punch from cousin Devon.
Now we find Nate scheming with the devious Audra to oust Nikki and Nick Newman from their posts as co-CEO and COO of New Enterprises respectively.  The plan is for Nate to replace Nikki and Audra to replace Nick.  Nate is going to use his relationship with Victoria as means to climb the corporate ladder.  That's right.  He's going to use her.  Princess Victoria doesn't know it yet, but she is going to suffer yet another heartbreak.  That's going to be hard to take, especially after what she went through with Ashland Locke.  It seems that her brother Nick was right when he told her she makes poor choices in men.  Who can argue with that after her ordeals with Ryan and Billy and J.T. and Ashland,
Victoria is a cold, hard-nosed businesswoman.  When it comes to matters of the heart, however, she seems to have a low IQ.  It can't just be hard luck - not that many times.  My only conclusion is that she simply has poor judgement when it comes to relationships and marriage.  Nick shouldn't be preaching to her, though.  His record with relationships is just as bad.

In my previous previous column, I speculated that the mysterious person stalking Sharon was Cameron Kerson, the wicked businessman who tormented and abused Sharon (the character appeared on Y&R from November 2003 and August 2004).  It turns out that Cameron is indeed back in Genoa City for a limited time.  It's not really surprising because Linden Ashby, who portrays Cameron, is the real-life husband of Susan Walters (Diane Jenkins).  This time, it appears that Cameron is also going to harass Faith Newman, the daughter of Sharon and Nick.

Faith has returned, most likely just for the summer.  Moses is nowhere to be seen, though.  I wonder if the two have broken up.  Anyway, it was good to see the return of Faith and I was pleased that Sharon's house was shown again.  It hasn't been shown for so long, probably since Rey Rosaeles died..  As I've mentioned before, Sharon practically lives in the coffee house.

It seems that Adam Newman is gaining ground with Sally Spectra.  Nick wasn't there for Sally when Sally didn't feel well and she was worried about the baby.  However, Adam was there for he and he gave her his undivided attention.  Meanwhile. Nick was more involved with  protecting Sharon and Faith from Cameron.  Did you notice that when Nick finally got around to checking on Sally, he was not upfront with her.  He neglected to tell her about Sharon's situation.  Sally has already run into Cameron, but has not been warned about him.  I wonder if Cameron will cause her to lose her baby.  I just have a feeling that Sally is going to have a miscarriage.  If that happens, Adam and Sally will be furious with Nick.

Summer has to be the most foolish character on the show.  I think she has topped Jack.  I know that she is behaving that way to create a storyline, but does she have to be that dense?  Summer is protecting her mother at all costs, sacrificing everything, including her marriage to Kyle, for the sake of Phyllis.  This isn't helping Phyllis either.  Daniel is right to say that Phyllis should come home, turn herself in, and face the consequences.  Lily hit the nail on the head when she told Daniel that his mother is selfish and a coward.  She can't hide forever and the longer she hides, the worse she makes the situation for herself.  The Cricketmeister will be relentless in tracking Phyllis down.  The animosity between Cricket and Phyllis goes back a long way.  There is no love lost between the two.
I'm glad that Kyle walked in on Phyllis with Summer and Kyle, but don't expect Phyllis to turn herself in, even though Kyle has seen her.  Expect her to continue to act recklessly and selfishly.   Kyle made some good points about how Phyllis was putting them all at risk for aiding and abetting a fugitive.  Unfortunately, he caved in and said he would not turn his mother-in-law  in - at least for now.   Phyllis and Summer pleaded with him to give them time to clear Phyllis's name.  Just how are they going to prove she acted in self-defence when she killed Jeremy Stark?  There were no witnesses.

Now that District Attorney Cricketmeister has freed Diane, expect Diane to behave more recklessly,  She has Jack and Kyle wrapped around her baby finger. She's already acting very smug with Ashley. Jack and Diane think they are  safely out of the woods now.  Will they ever be surprised!  Their troubles haven't ended.  They cannot live happily ever after on a soap.

Have you noticed that the show seems to have dropped that silly storyline involving Nikki and that accountant from her past.  It doesn't seem like  they are going to pursue that storyline.  I hope it stays that way.  I don't think it would be very popular with Y&R fans.  I guess the powers that be came to their senses and dropped it like a hot potato.  Thank goodness!

Lily Brooks O'Briant (Lucy) has existed for now

Lily Brooks O'Briant has departed for now, but reports advise us to expect her back soon.  Her character, Lucy Romalotti, could be involved in a storyline involving Johnny Abbott and Connor Newman.  Johnny seems to like Lucy, and that could cause friction between him and his brother, Connor.

Y&R REPORT READERS' POLL

Lucy Romalotti (Lily Brooks O'Briant), Daniel's daughter, has been hanging around Genoa City.  She has left town for now but will probably return for a teen storyline.  How do you feel about that, fans?  Would you like to see more of  Lucy?  Are you impressed with her?  Respond to the poll below and let me know.

Danny Bonaduce of the Partridge Family faces brain surgery

Danny Bonaduce of Partridge Family fame is struggling with a severe health issue.  The former child star has been diagnosed with hydrophalus, a neurological disorder that is caused by fluid in the brain.  It has affected his ability to walk.

The 63-year-old radio host disclosed that he is booked for brain surgery on Monday, June 5.  A stent and a drainage port will be inserted into his brain.  "From what I hear, if the diagnosis is correct, it'll be 50 per cent better right [away}. But I'd rather be safe than sorry," Danny told TMZ,  "I don't wanna get my hopes up too much that I'll be cured."

Despite his rise to stardom on The Partridge Family, The Pennsylvania-born Bonaduce has not has an easy life, and he was arrested for criminal behaviour in the early 1990s.  By his own account, Danny's family was dysfunctional, and he was physically and emotionally abused by his father, Joseph Bonaduce, a TV writer and producer.  In fact, Danny's mother on The Partridge Family, Shirley Jones, permitted him to stay at her place to avoid his unhappy home life.  Shirley once described Danny as "talented" but a troublemaker off-camera.  "He would do kid things like get a dish of food and throw it across the room or have a pillow fight," she said.

Below is a photo of Danny as the red-haired, impish Danny Partridge, the middle Partridge son.  He played bass guitar in the family band.

Danny in Partridge Family days

In March of 1990, Danny was arrested while attempting to purchase cocaine in Daytona Beach, Florida.  In March of 1991, he was arrested in Phoenix, Arizona for robbing and assaulting a transvestite.

Danny has a black belt in Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial art based on Karate.  As an adult, he has boxed in charitable events against Donny Osmond and former Brady Bunch star Barry Williams.  In January of 2009, Danny fought baseball's Jose Canseco in a charity event. They fought to a majority draw.  In April of 1994, Danny made his professional wrestling debut.

Danny has been married three times and divorced twice.  He married his current wife, Amy Railback, in 2010.  Amy manages his career and it was she who noticed that he was having difficulty walking and maintaining his balance.  His voice didn't sound right either.

In April of 2022, Danny revealed via Instagram that he was walking with a cane.  He met with numerous doctors to figure out what was wrong.  A stroke was ruled out and he was finally diagnosed with a neurological disorder.

As to why his health has declined, Danny made the following comment to TMZ:  "I can't figure out what caused it, 'cause I've done so many stupid things on reality TV shows.  I took a guitar to the head.  That hurt - and was possibly the cause of all this.  I got punched in the face by Jose Canseco, a 265-pound professional athlete.  And by the way, I didn't hit the floor."

Danny Bonaduce's friends and fans hope that his brain surgery goes well.  Even with the surgery, however, Danny is aware that his life still won't return to normal.  "I'm never gonna run track.  I'm never gonna box again.  But if I can get from here to the kitchen on my own, bravo."
